Significant advances in microbiology have been achieved thanks to continuous innovations in mass spectrometry (MS) over the past decade. Now the standard in microorganism identification, Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight (MALDI-TOF) MS enables microbiology laboratories to reliably and rapidly identify microbes, in a cost-effective manner.

A revolution in microbiology

Microorganisms identification to the species level is a key task of microbiology. Traditionally has been achieved by carrying out labour-intensive and time-consuming biochemical assays. Though current sequencing technologies may provide very precise insights, they are still far too slow and expensive. Bruker has successfully introduced an innovative, molecular-based mass spectrometric identification method that enables faster and more efficient analysis than conventional assays or sequencing.

By using our experience and expertise as a worldwide leading provider of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, Bruker developed the MALDI Biotyper®- a revolutionary approach for the analysis of microorganisms. This "Open Microbiology Concept" includes interfacing, own library creation and can be easily integrated into any laboratory environment. Within just a few years, the MALDI Biotyper®has become the worldwide leading solution for clinical microbiology, as well as for water, pharmaceutical and food testing.

The MALDI Biotyper®(MBT) is a microbial identification system based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, allowing unbiased identification of microorganisms within a few minutes down to the species level. The MBT is an easy, rapid, robust, high-throughput, cost-effective and efficient identification technology, ideally suited to microbial laboratories.

Due to its broad applicability, speed of analysis and low sample processing costs, the MBT is ideally suited to the role of microorganism identification. MALDI-TOF MS determines the unique proteomic fingerprint of an organism, and matches characteristic patterns with an extensive reference library to determine the organism´s identity. Continuous expansion of the reference library ensures that a broad range of microorganisms can be identified easily.

System improvements, including the newest electronics and high-performance vacuum system, generate very fast target exchange.
  • The NEW MALDI Biotyper®sirius GP or RUO System, with the same improvements, smartbeam™ 200 Hz laser and positive as well as negative ion detection. The additional capability of analysis in negative ion mode broadens the research applications, such as the analysis of lipids.
